Can Women Do Body Beast?

Yes, Yes, and then YES again!!!
I get asked this almost everyday now that I have started doing Body Beast! Obviously I am a woman and today is day 23 for me.
I have to admit when I first saw Body Beast and BeachBody released it, I was immediately turned off because it was geared towards men who were wanting to get HUGE! There wasnt a woman in the DVD’s and even the test groups were all men – I just thought, “Nah I will find another strength training program.” HA – Little did I know!
After my good friend, Coby, talked me into joining his Body Beast accountability group did I really start researching what this “old school body building” workout was all about! I did complete nutrition research, read every piece of reading material possible and then sat down and started watching the DVD’s. I knew immediately that: 1.) I was scared and 2.) this was for me!!!
Will Body Beast Make me bulk up? No, women are not meant to “bulk” and get husky unless they are taking some type of hormone enhancing drug! Will you gain LEAN MEAN muscle? YES! Gaining muscle mass will make your metabolism FASTER and you will BURN FAT FASTER – hello??!!! Who doesnt want that?
Women do NOT have the same results from weight lifting as men! We get tighter, leaner, and more toned!!
There are 2 options with Body Beast – a LEAN phase and a HUGE phase! Lean has more cardio in it, as Huge only has a few cardio days. Don’t let that fool you tho, it is HARD! Sagi was not joking when it came to creating the cardio portion of Beast! I am personally following the huge phase and then incorporating maybe 2 days a week of cardio.
NUTRITION! How Much Do I Eat? Nutrition is KEY with BodyBeast – you are doing so much strength training and working a different muscle group everyday that you NEED to fuel your body and repair your muscles! I was not a happy camper when I learned that the first 9 weeks I had to up my calorie intake by about 500 calories (GASP!) – But I NEED it! If I wasn’t eating over 2,000 calories a day I would just be burning muscle off, breaking my body down and starving myself. Now that I am eating more I feel 10x better – I feel satisfied, but not only that, I cleaned my diet up so much that even tho I am eating close to 2,200 a day I dont feel guilty! I have only gained one pound, but I am so much LEANER – check out my pics!
My hips and back and LOVE HANDLES are shrinking!!!
Look how DEFINED my back is getting!!!
Should I Be Taking Supplements? At first, I was not going to take any supplements except my normal Shakeology and Cordastra….BUT after my researched I realized I needed to be taking at least the Fuel Shot and Base Shake! I now just mix my Base Shake with my Shakeology as my post workout protein shake!
This Base Shake was formulated to help maximize new muscle growth and reduce muscle breakdown—at the same time. A flavor-neutral base lets you whip up your shake just the way you want it.

Hypothyroidism Update
I haven’t posted lately about my thyroid issues just because I haven’t been too clear what is going on – but this past week I had a few doctors appointments, some that went really well and some that went not so well – but regardless I am alive and breathing!
As you may know, or not, I was diagnosed with several things about 6 months ago – it was all so much to take in at one time, but it answered many questions I was having about my health, my day to day schedule and just the way I felt. Thank goodness we found out that one of my issues was that my Thyroid levels were extremely low and was able to get a grasp on it. At first I was put on a low dose of Synthroid and every 2 months I have had to have my dosage upped because I just wasn’t stabling out, but not only that I have several polyps on my thyroid.
This past week I had another ultrasound on my thyroid and unfortunately one of my polyps or cysts grew by the slightest amount and it looked like I had 1 more show up – my endocrinologist didn’t seem too concerned, but I will have another u/s in 2 months and see where we are at. He also took me off of Synthroid and put me on 2 different types of Thyroid medicine – one for my T3 and one for T4. My thyroid levels just keep getting worse. The new meds are called Cytomel and Tirosint and I must take them twice a day everyday. I have a new schedule of waking up a 6am and taking 2 pills and then repeating the process at 2pm and not eating within 1 hour of taking them. I eat every 2 hours basically, so now I have to carefully plan my meals every single day to make sure I keep my metabolism going and not skipping any meals!
I was telling my doctor that I was concerned because workouts I would do 9 months ago I would burn 1000 calories in an hour and now I can do that same exact workout and maybe burn 600 in an hour – its concerning and I have noticed myself gain a little weight off and on – but my eating habits were basically the same. He assured me its because my thyroid levels are so unstable, going up and down that my metabolism is definitely not where it should be for someone as active as I am – he told me to wait about 2-3 weeks and with this new schedule of taking my meds and on a better eating schedule I will start seeing a significant difference in my mood, energy and metabolism – THANK GOODNESS!!! I should also not be so “foggy headed” (I forget everything) and tired (by 3pm I am ready for a nap). I am also getting my iron checked again in August because the levels are dropping off again – but I was told it would happen and I would most likely need infusions twice a year.
This whole experience has been a process! Celiac’s Disease, Hypothyroidism and Anemia to the point of infusions have been a lot to take in – I guess because it all happened within a 3-4 week time frame! BUT, I am so thankful for my doctors, they definitely are taking care of me and even make house calls to see how I am feeling!
I am still taking care of myself and NOT drowning in this – I have kept my chin held high, even though there were times I wanted to cry and wollow. I know how far I have come in the past 2.5 years – I have lost over 50 pounds and kept it off, I have improved myself in every way possible and thankful for those that have supported me. The thyroid disease has made it more difficult to lose the weight and even keep it off, but guess what – it’s been a life decision to make my health a priority – not just to “be skinny” but to be healthy and be a GREAT example to my kids. I love going to restaurants and my kids asking for Gluten Free or broccoli instead of fries – makes my heart happy!
If you are reading this and have a possible thyroid issue and just need support and encouragement, please reach out to me and I will more than happy be an “ear” for you! krystalbland1224@yahoo.com

10 Workout Secrets
Getting and staying fit can be a challenge. For many of us, it’s hard enough just to get up off the couch. So what’s the secret of people who have managed to make exercise a way of life?
1. Be Consistent
No exercise program in the world works if you don’t do it consistently. It doesnt matter if you are the fastest, do the most reps or can even finish the complete program the first week – the point is to be consistent. You will build up stamina, speed and agility – but sometimes you have to start off slow, dont let that turn you off from becoming a healthier YOU!
2. Follow an Effective Exercise Routine
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) recently surveyed 1,000 ACE-certified personal trainers about the best techniques to get fit. Their top three suggestions:
- Strength training. Even 20 minutes a day twice a week will help tone the entire body.
- Interval training. In its most basic form, interval training might involve walking for two minutes, running for two, and alternating this pattern throughout the duration of a workout, It is an extremely time-efficient and productive way to exercise.
- Increased cardio/aerobic exercise. Accumulating 60 minutes or more a day of low- to moderate-intensity physical activity, such as walking, running, or dancing.
3. Set Realistic Goals
Don’t strive for perfection or an improbable goal that can’t be met. Focus instead on creating healthy habits and behaviors.
In other words, don’t worry if you can’t run a 5K just yet. Make it a habit to walk 15 minutes a day, and add time, distance, and intensity from there.
4. Use the Buddy System

Find a friend or relative whom you like and trust who also wants to establish a healthier lifestyle. Encourage one another. Exercise together. Use this as an opportunity to enjoy one another’s company and to strengthen the relationship.
5. Make Your Plan Fit Your Life
Too busy to get to the gym? You don’t need fancy exercise gear and gyms to get fit.
If you’ve got floor space, try simple floor exercises to target areas such as the hips and buttocks, legs and thighs, and chest and arms (like push-ups, squats, and lunges). Aim for 10-12 repetitions of each exercise, adding more reps and intensity as you build strength.
6. Be Happy
Be sure to pick an activity you actually enjoy doing.
If you hate weights, don’t go to the gym. You can lose weight and get in shape with any type of training or activity.
And choose something that is convenient. Rock climbing may be a great workout, but if you live in a city, it’s not something you’ll be doing every day.
7. Watch the Clock
Your body clock, that is. Try to work out at the time you have the most energy. If you’re a morning person, schedule your fitness activities early in the day; if you perk up as the day goes along, plan your activities in the afternoon or evening.
Working out while you have the most energy will give you the best results!
8. Call In the Pros
Especially if you’re first getting started. For some people, attention to flexibility, or balance and agility, may be more important than resistance training or aerobics. By getting a professional assessment, you can determine your weakest links and focus on them. This will improve your overall fitness balance.
9. Get Inspired
Fitness is a state of mind. A trick to get and stay motivated is to read blogs or web sites that show him how others have been successful. Who inspires you?
10. Be Patient
Finally, remember that even if you follow all these tips, there will be ups and downs, setbacks and victories. Just be patient, and don’t give up: Hang in there, and you’ll see solid results.
