Why You Should Workout In The Morning
Need some compelling reasons to work out in the morning? There has been a longstanding debate on what part of the day is the best time to work out. Some people prefer to sleep in and hit the gym post workday while others are hardcore believers in tackling the daily workout at the top of the morning. Despite which school of workout thought you believe in- here are 7 great reasons to work out in the morning and get your day started off right!
1. JUMP START YOUR METABOLISM
Some studies show that exercising in the morning can get your metabolism going and can keep it elevated throughout the day. Maximize your opportunities to raise your metabolic rate by including weight training when you do your morning workout. Lifting weights is a proven method of getting your metabolism going, so be sure to include it in your morning routine!
2. GET YOUR MIND RIGHT
Prepare for the day ahead by starting it with a workout. You might feel like your head is cloudy first thing in the morning and a workout is the last thing on your mind, but it will definitely clear your head and you’ll be much more alert and awake afterward. What better reason to work out in the morning than starting off your workday with a clear mind? Hitting the gym is much more effective in increasing your mental acuity than hitting the snooze button.
3. FIGHT THE CROWD
For those who go to the gym to work out, the earlier in the day you get there, the less crowded it will be and the faster you will get out. I’m sure you’ve had experiences where you carve out an hour to work out and the gym is so crowded or gym rats are roaming around socializing and getting in the way of your workout that you end up spending double the time there. Think about it-no waiting in line for a machine, no being elbow-to-elbow with anyone while working out and having free reign of the gym is an awesome reason to work out in the A.M.
4. CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Yet another good reason to work out in the morning is that you are much more likely to stick with your daily workout when it’s done in the morning. In the evening you won’t have the excuse that you’re too tired from work to exercise, no last-minute invites to dinner or happy hour or any other commitments to prevent you from your sweat session. What better feeling is there than knowing that your workout can be crossed off your «to do» list first thing in the morning and your evening is free to do whatever you want?!
5. BETTER SLEEP
Working out gets you energized and if you work out at night it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to get in the mindset to sleep for hours after which can impede your ability to get a good night’s sleep. When you work out in the morning, you’re waking up at the same time to get enough time for your calisthenics sesh which puts you on a regular sleeping schedule and also helps regulate your thyroid and circadian rhythm. Working out in the morning doesn’t mean less sleep, you’ll just wake up earlier.
6. BURN MORE CALORIES
Some researchers opine that those who work out in the morning burn more calories as they are more likely to spend more time on their workout and have more energy at the beginning of the day opposed to those who like to get their sweat on in the afternoons or evenings. Generally, you have more time and energy in the morning to devote to your workout since you have a specific amount of time blocked off with nothing on your social agenda to prevent you from cutting your
7. YOU CAN SKIP COFFEE
Not only are you more alert in the morning, you will remain alert after your workout thus reducing your need to get your energy through artificial means. Coffee is great and all, don’t get me wrong, but if you’re trying to kick the habit or reduce your intake of caffeine, it’s more of a reason to work out in the morning and avoid a caffeine crash later.
There are some great reasons to work out in the morning but any workout is better than no workout at all. If you find yourself to be too busy in the mornings or you’re a night owl who’d rather stick needles in your eyes rather than wake up early, do what works for you! Being healthy is not contingent upon the time of day, so do your thing whenever your life allows time for it!
Hypothyroidism Update
I haven’t posted lately about my thyroid issues just because I haven’t been too clear what is going on – but this past week I had a few doctors appointments, some that went really well and some that went not so well – but regardless I am alive and breathing!
As you may know, or not, I was diagnosed with several things about 6 months ago – it was all so much to take in at one time, but it answered many questions I was having about my health, my day to day schedule and just the way I felt. Thank goodness we found out that one of my issues was that my Thyroid levels were extremely low and was able to get a grasp on it. At first I was put on a low dose of Synthroid and every 2 months I have had to have my dosage upped because I just wasn’t stabling out, but not only that I have several polyps on my thyroid.
This past week I had another ultrasound on my thyroid and unfortunately one of my polyps or cysts grew by the slightest amount and it looked like I had 1 more show up – my endocrinologist didn’t seem too concerned, but I will have another u/s in 2 months and see where we are at. He also took me off of Synthroid and put me on 2 different types of Thyroid medicine – one for my T3 and one for T4. My thyroid levels just keep getting worse. The new meds are called Cytomel and Tirosint and I must take them twice a day everyday. I have a new schedule of waking up a 6am and taking 2 pills and then repeating the process at 2pm and not eating within 1 hour of taking them. I eat every 2 hours basically, so now I have to carefully plan my meals every single day to make sure I keep my metabolism going and not skipping any meals!
I was telling my doctor that I was concerned because workouts I would do 9 months ago I would burn 1000 calories in an hour and now I can do that same exact workout and maybe burn 600 in an hour – its concerning and I have noticed myself gain a little weight off and on – but my eating habits were basically the same. He assured me its because my thyroid levels are so unstable, going up and down that my metabolism is definitely not where it should be for someone as active as I am – he told me to wait about 2-3 weeks and with this new schedule of taking my meds and on a better eating schedule I will start seeing a significant difference in my mood, energy and metabolism – THANK GOODNESS!!! I should also not be so “foggy headed” (I forget everything) and tired (by 3pm I am ready for a nap). I am also getting my iron checked again in August because the levels are dropping off again – but I was told it would happen and I would most likely need infusions twice a year.
This whole experience has been a process! Celiac’s Disease, Hypothyroidism and Anemia to the point of infusions have been a lot to take in – I guess because it all happened within a 3-4 week time frame! BUT, I am so thankful for my doctors, they definitely are taking care of me and even make house calls to see how I am feeling!
I am still taking care of myself and NOT drowning in this – I have kept my chin held high, even though there were times I wanted to cry and wollow. I know how far I have come in the past 2.5 years – I have lost over 50 pounds and kept it off, I have improved myself in every way possible and thankful for those that have supported me. The thyroid disease has made it more difficult to lose the weight and even keep it off, but guess what – it’s been a life decision to make my health a priority – not just to “be skinny” but to be healthy and be a GREAT example to my kids. I love going to restaurants and my kids asking for Gluten Free or broccoli instead of fries – makes my heart happy!
If you are reading this and have a possible thyroid issue and just need support and encouragement, please reach out to me and I will more than happy be an “ear” for you! krystalbland1224@yahoo.com

Doctor Appointment Update!
1-16-2012
Today I had an appointment with my Hematologist/Oncologist, Dr Kocs (pronounced COSS). First I have to say, what an awesome doctor, he was funny, up front – no beating around the bush, and came off very smart and confident in the information and suggestions he was giving me – which in return made me feel confident that I was in great hands…definitely calmed my nerves.
Next, walking into Texas Oncology made me feel scared – this is a cancer patient center and seeing everyone in the waiting room who were suffering from cancer or other blood related diseases just broke my heart, I felt like I shouldnt have been there and like my issues were not serious enough to be in this place – I almost felt silly going in to check my iron levels and other things flagged in my blood results…but, I do have to say I am glad I went..
Dr. Kocs came in and immediately told me that my ferritin levels were way too low. I am considered extremely anemic/iron deficient – but not only that my body is losing 90% of my iron, I am only using 10% iron – the rest my body is losing it. I asked why and he asked questions related to my menstrual cycle, what I ate, supplements I took, etc, etc…Since I could not give a definitive answer to have him think why I am having this issues – he told me we are going to start Intravenous or IV infusion treatments ASAP. I asked about supplementing iron with a pill form and he told me even if we stopped my blood flow and I took a high dosage of iron every single day all I would do is get constipated and then it would take 6+ months for my body to absorb that much iron from the pills to balance my ferritin levels out.
Starting Wednesday afternoon I go in for my first treatment. Basically I am hooked up to an IV for 2.5 hours while they pump me full of iron. I have to do this twice a week for 6 weeks and then every few months I will come back for blood tests to see if I need more iron infusions. I will definitely be bringing the iPad and headphones and use that time to do BeachBody work or watch movies…
I should start seeing an improvement of my nails, skin and energy levels within 2 weeks – YAY, but it could take about a month before all my symptoms are gone. Between my Synthroid for my Hashimoto’s and the IV Iron Therapy I should be feeling normal within a month – which I am sooo excited for! I cant wait to get back to normal. I am scared and excited all in one – I am not thrilled to be hooked up to an IV twice a week for 5 hours, but at this point I am willing to do anything!
The way my life has changed in the past 6 weeks is unbelievable…December 4th I went to my doc for a yearly exam and blood work only to find out I have thyroid issues, testosterone issues, iron issues, insulin issues and gluten allergies! Who would have thought?! The fact I have still been able to lose 52 pounds and keep it off has seriously shocked me! Even my doctors are amazed I have been able to lose all this weight with the issues I am having. I have to say it was HARD – it wasnt easy and it is definitely something I never want to do again, I will always live a healthy lifestyle. Just imagine if I didnt have these issues??? I could have cut my weight loss journey in half….but I wouldnt change it for the world – this is who I am and this will only make me stronger! If you have something that is holding you back, YOU are the only person who can get over that set back and move forward…I didnt even know I was having health issues – I could have used that as an excuse as to why I wasnt losing fast, but I didnt, I kept going and kept pursuing my goals and ITS BEEN WORTH EVERY SINGLE STRUGGLE!!!
